How does chapter 14 provide a transition in the flow of the confession? What is faith? Why add the adjective “saving,” is there another kind of faith? How is the Bible and the Holy Spirit involved in our faith? What would some people object to in this paragraph? How does preaching increase our faith? Is the confession accurate when it says faith is “ordinarily” wrought by the ministry of the Word? How do the sacraments strengthen our faith? How does prayer strengthen our faith? Tune in as Nathan, Joel, Shawn, and Kyle discuss WCF 14.1:
The grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of their souls, is the work of the Spirit of Christ in their hearts, and is ordinarily wrought by the ministry of the Word, by which also, and by the administration of the sacraments, and prayer, it is increased and strengthened.
Hey guys! This is my first episode listening to you guys. I really like it!
I just wanted to add:
I have been a believer for over a year now, and I can say that I was saved by the preaching of the Word. It was August 6th last year that the preacher in the first Christian Church I had ever been to – I was raised Mormon – asked at the end of his sermon if anyone didn’t know the Lord Jesus and gave the invitation (it was an independent fundamental Baptist Church; I am a good ol’ baby sprinkling Presbyterian now). That day I was saved. A week later I was baptised. I didn’t come out of Mormonism because of the preached Word, but I certainly came into the Kingdom from Pastor Wallace’s sermon. It was many things that pulled me out. But I would never have actually said the prayer I had said had I not been instructed by a minister to do so. Say what you will about Baptist alter calls, but the preaching of the word followed by the command to repent and believe is something I will always believe in, and definitely how the Lord saved me.
